The liquid delivery capabilities of the SonicSyringe(TM) are well suited to a wide array of applications with aqueous and solvent-based suspensions, including:
- Fuel cell catalyst solutions
- Nanosuspensions
- Slurries with particle sizes up to 25 microns
- Carbon inks and carbon nanotubes
- Ceramic slurries
SonicSyringe
Ultrasonic Dispersion Syringe Pump - Ideal for deagglomeration of nanoparticles and catalyst slurries that have a tendency to clump and are difficult to keep evenly dispersed in suspension.
The SonicSyringe(TM) Ultrasonic Dispersion Syringe Pump is designed to quickly disperse particles in a mixture and hold them evenly suspended for several hours or more. The ultrasonic system disperses agglomerated particles quicker and more uniformly than magnetic stirring or sonic baths commonly used for the same applications. High frequency ultrasonic vibrations hold particles evenly suspended for longer periods of time, improving process quality by delivering consistent particle suspension characteristics during the entire coating process.
The SonicSyringe(TM) features:
- Capable of operation with small liquid sample sizes (only 5-10 ml/required)
- Ability to program ultrasonic vibration duration and intensity for specific liquid suspension characteristics
- Easily configured with Sono-Tek's ultrasonic atomizing nozzles
- Can be fully integrated as an inline unit into Sono-Tek's FlexiCoat and ExactaCoat programmable XYZ coating systems
- Thoroughly mixes particles in just a few seconds
- Holds particles suspended in solution for several hours, depending on liquid suspension characteristics
Sono-Tek's state-of-the-art programmable XYZ platforms provide complete coating system solutions with advanced ultrasonic capabilities and integrated options such as heating, vacuum plates and a user-friendly trackball controller. Systems are available for both inline production and laboratory-scale use.
Operating Principle

The SonicSyringe(TM) employs disc-shaped piezoelectric transducers located inside the syringe plunger to convert high-frequency electrical energy into mechanical energy, which is transferred into the liquid suspension. An Ultrasonic Control Module provides the high-frequency electrical input controlling power intensity and duration, depending on the liquid suspension characteristics.
The resulting high-frequency and high-reflection vibrations created inside the syringe barrel effectively mix most slurries, dispersions, and suspensions to near-perfect homogenous blends within a few seconds.
Further electrical impulses triggered automatically from the Control Module generate continuous vibrations, holding particles evenly dispersed in the suspension for several hours.
